the other BC

Things are going well down in this cool Mexican city. We’ve been staying in Ensenada for the last couple of nights, and pretty much have just been kickin’ it. Our first day was long, and spent just trying to stand on our feet. After some deep sleep, yesterday was the first day cruisin’ the streets. It’s not as warm as you might think down here, especially being January. 65 degrees has been the average temp, and it gets hella cold at night, to the point were we have all needed to buy more clothing. Yesterday was new years eve, so we grabbed some tequila and Tecate and headed down to the sand dunes, about half hour walk out of the city. I spent 20 minutes talking to the some Senora just so I could convince her that I had the best intentions possible taking a photo of her license plate. Fireworks on the beach.

The night came quickly, as were chillin’ on the street eating some fresh seafood out of a clam shell. Food here has been so good, and super cheap. Tacos have been the diet for days now, and it doesn’t get old. So last night was an adventure. Wes and Adrian had some more fireworks, or should I say legal dynamite, and we spent a good hour or so throwing them in the streets, and blowing up can’s to see who would catch the next one. Then Nick and I went cruisin’ the streets to get some food, while we’re waiting for the boys to come back with more explosives. All I did was ask some guy crossing the street, “Donde puedo comprar comida ahora?, and next thing you know, we’re partying with him in his apartment.

The guy was drunk, and promised us food in his kitchen. So Nick and I rolled with it, I mean,…it’s all about experiencing the culture, right? Tequila was immediately poured, followed by some loud latino musica, and the whole time we’re reassuring each other that if anything goes down, we have each others back. But of course it was nothing like this, and infact, our random amigo left us in his house, and went downstairs to grab his amiga, and before we could get a swig of tequila in, she’s bringing chicken drum sticks and macaroni enselada over for us. It was soooooo sweet! Eventually though, we had to tear, and go meet up with our bro’s.

The rest of the evening you can kind of picture on your own. We headed downtown, got lost, partied it up, the clock came a tickin’ around 12am and we all started shouting, and dancing. Too much tequila and not enough food, and soon I found myself in bed watching the back of my eyelids.

This morning is good though, and I’m ready for some cafe’ con leche. Everyone is still passed out, but in a couple of hours we’ll be staying in a new place for $10 a night. Tomorrow we’re most likely headed down farther south to a nice coastal town called, San Quintin. That’s where we’re going to try and catch a boat out to Isla de Guadalupe where we can see the famous great white shark.

Hour by hour, that’s how you have to take it in Latin America.
